R_Meteor shows you meteors on your PC - day or night - clear or cloudy.

R_Meteor analyses radio signals received from a distant transmitter to extract the characteristic signature of radio energy scattered by meteor trails. Using Fast Fourier Transforms, R_Meteor shows you the signal produced by the plasma clouds from meteors, drifting in the upper wind, when they are illuminated by a powerful radio transmitter. You can detect meteors during the day as well as during the night and it works even if the sky is covered in cloud.

Certain types of communications receiver can be controlled via a serial interface. If you have such a radio, R_Meteor also allows you to control the frequencies to be used around the clock for full 24-hour meteor monitoring.

If you register R_Meteor, you can also configure it to record the images of the meteors continuously to a graphics file. To enjoy this feature, you can register R_Meteor here for only Euro €25 (plus 19% IVA tax).

Requirements

R_Meteor runs on a PC under Windows 95/98. You need an HF communications receiver which must be tuned to an HF braodcast transmitter which is within the 'skip distance' ie: one that is not receivable directly nor by ionospheric reflection but which illuminates the sky above your receiver. To capture the audio signal from your radio receiver, you must have a 16-bit SoundBlaster-compatible sound card that supports audio capture at 8k samples. Your radio must be capable of USB/LSB or CW mode of operation and must be frequency stable. Optionally, to control the tuning of the radio, your PC also needs a spare serial port; your radio must be compatible and if necessary, you must have a level-shifter or serial interface adaptor to suit the radio.

Downloading and installation

You can download R_Meteor for free! When you have downloaded the file, unzip it and then run the SETUP.EXE program which will guide you through the installation of the software. R_Meteor has a comprehensive context-sensitive help file that includes articles on how to connect your radio's audio output to your PC's audio input, how to customize the remote control of the radio's frequency, how to choose a radio frequency to monitor, and how to interpret the display of meteors.
